The healthcare system in India offers legal abortion options to the women seeking it or as per prescription. The provision got legal affirmation in 1971 with the introduction of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 (MTP Act, 1971). To address the needs of situations concerning women safety and health, the government also introduced many amendments, the latest being MTP Act, 2021.
Abortion procedures in India are safe when qualified, trained and licensed medical professionals perform them under prescribed guidelines. The World Health Organization (WHO) drafted the fundamentals for safe abortion procedures.
