Hello dear reader! Welcome to our new post dedicated especially to nursing mothers. We have come across a common assumption multiple times in our practice and that’s why we wanted to share this information with you. Let’s begin!
Can you get pregnant while breastfeeding?
Most new mothers have a misconception that they cannot get pregnant while breastfeeding. But, that’s not true! Additionally, there is an opposite old wives tale that says that fertility chances are maximum up to 6 months postpartum. They would advise many women after deliveries to use contraceptives or complete abstinence cautioning them of an unwanted pregnancy.
All of this is not true. Here’s the right information from the abortion in UAE doctor.
While breastfeeding can delay the return of ovulation and menstruation, it’s not a foolproof method of birth control. This method is often called the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM).
Here’s some useful information for you.
LAM is effective.
If you exclusively breastfeed (no formula or solid foods for the baby) and your baby is under six months old, your chances of getting pregnant are low. LAM is effective primarily due to hormonal changes associated with breastfeeding. Here is a little insight for you.
Prolactin is a hormone, crucial for milk production. High levels of prolactin can suppress ovulation, preventing the release of an egg. The frequent and effective breastfeeding needed to maintain milk supply signals the body to delay the return of ovulation. And amenorrhea or the absence of menstruation is a common indicator of suppressed ovulation.
However, it’s important to note that LAM is not a foolproof method. Even when meeting the condition for effective LAM, exclusive breastfeeding, infant less than 6 months and absence of menstruation, there’s still a chance of pregnancy. And you can get pregnant wondering about what to do with an unwanted pregnancy.
Breastfeeding and pregnant? Considering options
Additionally, LAM effectiveness decreases over time:
As your baby gets older and your breastfeeding pattern changes, the effectiveness of LAM decreases. It’s crucial to use additional birth control if you want to avoid an unwanted pregnancy while breastfeeding.
What about getting pregnant soon after postpartum?
The misconception often arises from a misunderstanding of the postpartum period. While it’s true that a woman’s body undergoes significant changes after childbirth, the peak fertility period doesn’t magically shift to the first six months. Let’s try to figure this out.
Ovulation is a cyclical process. It occurs after a specific hormonal sequence. Postpartum hormonal changes primarily focus on milk production and uterine recovery, not immediate fertility boost. So, medically, you are not in your full fertility bloom period.
Once the body begins to return to a non-pregnant state which does not happen immediately, ovulation will eventually resume. So, peak fertility occurs after ovulation resumes, not before.
The idea that peak fertility spikes immediately postpartum is incorrect. It’s essential to understand this to avoid unintended pregnancies. Also, it’s crucial to use reliable contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies from surprising you.
Remember, even if the contraceptive fails, you do have a safe abortion option. So, never attempt self-abortion like buying abortion pills or other DIY abortion methods like consuming lots of raw papaya for abortion.
Each individual is different. If you find yourself pregnant and are looking forward to a safe abortion procedure, regardless of your country, do reach out to our helpline number for the best possible support.
Is it possible to obtain an abortion while breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant while breastfeeding and are not looking forward to continuing this pregnancy, it is okay. It is normal. Firstly, accept it and then look for safe abortion options. We are here to support you and provide you with the right pieces of information that may help you.
Legal barriers to safe abortions:
It is possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding and it is also possible to get an abortion for this pregnancy. However, whether you can have an abortion by choice for your case depends on the abortion rules of your country. If your country permits legal abortions for contraceptive failure or by choice, you can go ahead and discuss the available abortion methods for your case.
However, the difficulty stems when your country has criminalized abortions like the UAE. Or when the law does not allow you to terminate an ongoing pregnancy only because you do not want to take it through full term.
Given below is a list of countries with links to their abortion rules. Check out if you are eligible for an abortion in your place of residence.

Abortion and Lactation: Balancing Choices: Abortion methods for nursing mothers:
A mother seeking an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy while breastfeeding may have a very natural concern, “Can abortion harm my breastfed baby?” This is the most natural concern a woman may have if she can continue to breastfeed after an abortion. So, let’s clear these doubts.
To understand the impact of abortion on lactation, you need to know about the different abortion methods available and their correlation with lactation. Understanding the various abortion methods and their potential effects on breast milk can help ease concerns.
Let’s begin with the abortion pills.
Medical Abortion and Breastfeeding:
Medical abortion typically involves using two pills, mifepristone and misoprostol to terminate an intrauterine early pregnancy. Studies show very low levels of Mifepristone to pass into breast milk. (Source) Infant monitoring is recommended as a precaution, but serious side effects are rare.
Misoprostol also passes into breast milk in minimal amounts but no harmful effects have been reported for infants.
So, breastfeeding can usually continue. Most healthcare providers recommend uninterrupted breastfeeding after a medical abortion.
However, it is very important that you first have your eligibility checked for medical abortion. If the pregnancy is unexpected and you are unsure of when your ovulation resumed, it’s important to track the gestation age. Abortion pills are best effective only in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy and their efficiency starts declining thereafter. Doctors for abortion usually do not recommend using abortion pills beyond 8 weeks into pregnancy.
Another concern is ruling out any possibility of ectopic pregnancy. If you have had an IUCD just after the delivery of your breastfed child and you find out that you are pregnant. It can be an ectopic pregnancy, which is an emergency.
Even otherwise, ectopic pregnancy can happen even without an IUCD. Abortion pills do not abort an ectopic pregnancy which makes it again an unsuitable abortion method. So, please do not take abortion pills without advice from a registered medical practitioner.
Additionally, abortion tablets are not 100% effective even after taking them as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. This would mean that abortion attempts with pills can fail and result in a failed or incomplete abortion. It certainly can create unlikely complications until the abortion is completed using another intervention.
Gentle Care Suction Abortion and Breastfeeding:
Gentle Care suction abortion involves a minor procedure to remove the pregnancy. It doesn’t involve any medicines which can affect breastmilk supply or quality. The pregnancy removal is done with the help of mild suction created by an aspirator. This completely sucks the pregnancy tissue and removes it from the womb in just a few minutes. And hence, the procedure itself doesn’t affect milk supply or composition.
Abortion Methods
Gentle Care suction abortion is available at the registered abortion hospital in India. It is available for terminating intrauterine pregnancies up to 12 weeks regardless of a woman’s marital status or nationality. So, whether you are an Indian, Filipina, Russian expat, Emirati or any woman anywhere in the world struggling with an unwanted pregnancy, you can obtain a safe and legal abortion in India. Also, you do not need anyone’s consent besides yourself if you are over 18 years old.
Gentle Care induced abortion and Breastfeeding:
It is also a safe abortion method available for terminating intrauterine pregnancies between 12-20 weeks at a registered abortion clinic in India. The procedure involves labor induction followed by Dilatation & Evacuation (D&E) for womb cleaning. Although the medicines may reach the breast milk, in very small quantities, not enough to harm your baby. So, you may continue to breastfeed even after a Gentle Care induced abortion.
Prophylactic antibiotics, if necessary can be carefully prescribed considering that you are a nursing mother. So, you need not worry about your abortion medicines impacting your baby. However, always prioritize safety and consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
Practice open communication. Discuss your concerns and breastfeeding goals with your doctor. Additionally, monitor your baby after the abortion. Pay attention to any changes in your baby’s feeding or behavior after the abortion.
Remember, every woman’s experience is unique. While research suggests minimal risks to breastfeeding, individual circumstances may vary. Open and honest communication with your healthcare provider is crucial for making informed decisions.
